With so much rap music out there it’s always so hard to find your next favourite artist. Don’t fear because that’s where my rapper of the month feature comes to the rescue! Since its December it’s time to announce my pick for rapper of the month! I present to you the incredibly talented Caleb Byers coming out of Holland, Michigan. Yup you read the correctly Holland, Michigan. I needed to know more about him from his favourite rapper to what the hip hop scene is like in Holland. Ladies and gentleman I present to you our rapper of the month Caleb Byers.
So you put out a project a few months ago called Kale. Why the name Kale? Do you like to eat Kale a lot?
I do like to eat kale but that’s not really why I chose the name. “Big Kale” was what a lot of people wanted me to go by as a rapper for a while and eventually they just started calling me that. Obviously I chose not to go by that name, but I still wanted to do something with it so I used it for the mixtape. I wanted the name to have some meaning behind it but not really be that serious.
What has the reception been like so far for the project?
It’s been a lot better than I expected, this is definitely my most popular project by far. Nothing I’ve dropped before this has received the same feedback. I’ve been getting a lot more recognition from blogs and other artists for my music than I did before I put out this mixtape. So overall it’s been pretty good.
What your favourite song off the tape?
It changes a lot but right now it’s probably either “If You Want To” or “The Same Thing”. I really like the samples I used for both of them and they have kind of a unique sound compared to other songs on the tape.
What do you have coming out next? Videos that accompanied the project? A new project? Collaborations?
I’m always working on new music. I have some unreleased tracks I might put out soon, and I was thinking about a follow up mixtape or EP to this last project. That’s just an idea right now though. As for collaborations, I have something in the works with this producer from Atlanta for a mixtape he’s putting together, so that should be coming out soon. I don’t have any plans for videos as of right now, but that’s definitely something I want to do in the future.
So you’re coming out of Holland, Michigan. What’s the hip hop scene like out there?
There’s not much of a hip hop scene in Holland. I only know of a few other rappers from here that are putting out music. Holland’s pretty small so there’s not a lot going on when it comes to rap.
Was there someone in your life that inspired you to pursue music?
One of my friends definitely had a huge part in me deciding to pursue music. I never really took my music that seriously until he convinced me to put a song out a couple years ago. I probably still wouldn’t have anything out right now if he didn’t talk me into it, so shout out to him.
Are there many concert venues in Holland for rap / hip hop shows?
There are some venues for rap shows but not a lot. I’ve actually never even done a show in Holland, I usually go to other cities like Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo to perform. I want to do a show in Holland though, but I just haven’t had the opportunity yet.
What is the greatest concert you have ever seen?
The greatest concert I’ve ever seen was one of Kendrick Lamar’s “Kunta’s Groove Sessions”. It was crazy. He’s definitely one of the best performers out there.
What was the last album you listened to?
The Incredible True Story by Logic.
Who is your favourite rapper right now?
My favourite rapper is probably Big Sean or Kendrick Lamar.
If you could work with anyone past or present musically who would it be?
There’s a ton of people I’d want to work with but Kanye West would definitely be near the top of the list. He’s just super creative and in my opinion one of the best producers ever.
What do you want people to know about you and your music?
I guess something that not a lot of people know about my music is that I produce all of my songs myself. Whenever people find out they’re usually somewhat surprised. I just try to sound original and unique and eventually I hope that I’m what people choose to listen to.
