Following up 2011’s Arabia Mountain. Black Lips have returned with “Underneath the Rainbow” a solid album that answers the question of what exactly is Rock and Roll these days. A very good question, what is Rock these days? Well this is the answer, albeit with a bluesy twang and a Southern drawl. In looking at their back catalogue “Underneath the Rainbow” is like “Good Bad Not Evil” meets “200 Thousand Million” Poppy with mainstream appeal meets what in the hell was that? Inventiveness.
This has the trapping of a honest to god, Rock and Roll record of the summer and we desperately need one of those.
It’s fun, it’s catchy, you can dance to it. It’s everything Rock and Roll should be.It’s essential Black Lips that show they’re not slowing down or in danger of becoming redundant. Just showcasing they’re a Garage Rock Juggernaut.
“Underneath the Rainbow” is in stores on March 18th on Vice Records
